women spanning the globe 2023

Date & Time: June 6th | 8:15 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Location: Colwell Center (Formerly the Columbus Center), 701 E Pratt St, Baltimore, MD

Women perform the best as leaders when
they are doing something they enjoy. They,
in other words, are
in their element.

That's why “In Your Element” was the theme of our 2023 Women Spanning the Globe conference, held June 6th in Baltimore and virtually.

Being in your element often happens when there is a connection to the natural world. So, our conference was built around four natural elements – fire, water, air, and earth. There was, for example, discussions related to being powerful (fire), intentional (air), empathetic (water), and healthy (Earth). All the speakers focused on the challenges and opportunities in the business world that are unique to women.

Sessions

Morning Keynote:

Harnessing Your Innate Power for Change

Women lead differently. Their humanity, creativity, and prioritization of community is the difference the world sorely needs. Yet too many women downplay their natural leadership abilities, how they decide to show up, and where they allow themselves to shine. Faida Fuller shared how she has embraced her natural leadership abilities and, in doing so, empowers others to do the same. Through her leadership, Fuller has increased Vital Voices' capacity to invest in women who improve the world and bring their daring visions to life.

Awakening Women's Power in the Workplace

Women have a lot of power at the voting booth, in the marketplace, in their roles as mothers, and beyond. How can we bring this power to the workplace, where many women feel their male counterparts exclude them from conversations or make more money for the same job? If this question is not answered, the historical trend of women leaving their jobs ("The Great Breakup") or unhappily staying put because they cannot afford to leave ("quiet quitting")  will continue.

 Breaking the Double Bind

Have you ever been chastised for speaking up at work, even though your boss encouraged you to speak up more often? Have you been told to be both an assertive and empathetic leader, but not too much of either? And do some of your coworkers think of you as either competent or personable, but never both? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, you have been “double binded.” Hear success stories from dynamic women who, against all odds, have intentionally broken the double bind by remaining authentic and true to themselves.

 Embracing Empathy

A key ingredient to success is being empathetic. Leaders with this trait are more likely to be able to solve problems and drive growth and innovation. But empathetic women often are undervalued or dismissed in male-dominated work environments. Hear what several women have done on their own and in alignment with their male counterparts to foster a culture of empathy that benefits all genders.

 Choosing Yourself through Health

Being physically and mentally healthy is essential to living a productive and fulfilling life at home and work. What health issues should women, in particular, be mindful of preventing and treating? Hear examples of what people, including employers, are doing to address the unique health and wellness issues women face.

Afternoon Keynote:

Taking On A New Form

Women have traditionally been told just to accept bad things when they happen. But what if women stop doing this? Christine Michel Carter will discuss what it means for women to be more intentional with their careers, pay attention to their health, step into their power, and show empathy for one another. Women will leave this session with an understanding of how this new form - rooted in their elements - provokes continuous self-exploration and self-inspiration.

Women leaders face challenges and opportunities unique to their gender.

The annual Women Spanning the Globe conference hosted by WTCI is a chance to learn from and network with hundreds of emerging and existing women leaders from the Mid-Atlantic region.

The voices at the conference are diverse and expansive. Since the event's inception in 2005, speaker lineups have included marketing and banking executives, engineers, technology and human resources experts, journalists, and humanitarians. And while these women are spread across industries, they often experience the same professional challenges.

#WSTG2022: Here. We. Grow.

The 2022 Women Spanning the Globe conference was themed "Here. We. Grow." It served as a powerful backdrop for women leaders to gather and discuss the collective and individual progress and challenges in their professional journey. The event was held on June 14th at the American Visionary Art Museum.

Each conference participant was able to explore new pathways so they can continue to grow. And they did not have to go it alone — they were joined by hundreds of other like-minded women.
