The World Trade Center Institute (WTCI) offers one- and two-semester internships related to accounting, marketing and communications, program management, operations and human resources, business development and professional exchanges. The internships are a great opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students to learn about global business, as well as to network with peers and potential future employers. 

Open Internships

 Accounting and IT
  • Description: Assist in finance-related activities, such as accounts payable/receivable; assist in the preparation of quarterly expenses analysis and weekly financial reports; assist in IT related activities as needed; attend WTCI networking events; perform other miscellaneous duties. 

  • Skills needed: Professional communication and attitude; comfortable with working in a small office environment; general understanding of financial operations; attention to detail; knowledge of QuickBooks preferred but not necessary; knowledge of graphic software a plus. 
Program Management 
  • Description: Participate in the process of developing and executing the Bowe Fellowship sessions management and logistics; research and learn about the Mid-Atlantic’s top international companies and industries; utilize client management databases, such as Salesforce and Access; perform research on strategic alliances and potential new sources of revenue building for the Bowe Fellowship; assist with participant retention and composition analysis; communicate with potential participants and sponsors; attend WTCI networking events; other miscellaneous duties related to WTCI networking events or Bowe sessions. 
  • Skills needed: Interested in working with emerging global executives and learning about the Mid-Atlantic’s international business community; good interpersonal skills; professional communication and attitude; analytical skills; detail-oriented; ability to multi-task; knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite; comfortable with working in a small office environment 
Signature Series & Events

Be a key member of WTCI events team. As the Signature Events and Series Intern you will have the opportunity to help execute all or events. Some duties include:

  • Research and learn about Maryland’s top international companies and industries
  • Learn to use the Salesforce CRM and Asana project management systems
  • Perform research on strategic alliances and potential new sources of revenue  Communicate with potential participants and sponsors;
  • Attend WTCI networking events
  • Other miscellaneous duties related to WTCI networking events, or Signature Events and Series

Skills needed:

  • Interested in working with emerging global executives and learning about Baltimore’s international business community
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Professional communication and attitude
  • Analytical skills
  • Detail-oriented
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite 
  • Comfortable with working in a small virtual environment
Communications and Marketing
  • Description: Assist in marketing, communications, and event planning activities. For example, help with the development and design of marketing materials and advertising; research various companies and countries to assist in developing marketing language; use Google Analytics to increase web traffic; strategize best practices; participate in event preparation, management, and logistics; and update the website. The intern will also attend all WTCI networking events.
  • Skills needed: Professional communication and attitude; comfortable with working in a small office environment; attention to detail; excellent written and verbal communication skills in English (ability to write press releases is a plus); creativity and flexibility; ability to complete assignments on deadline; must be able to work independently with strong project management skills; knowledge of Adobe programs and advertising classes a plus; knowledge of HTML and/or WordPress is a plus. 
Business Development

Description: Research the Mid-Atlantic’s top international companies and industry sectors; perform customer relationship management tasks through database and account management; strategic planning for membership based on data collection and analysis; identify strategic outreach efforts to membership and sponsorship prospects; draft meeting notes agendas; prepare and organize new member onboarding material; event preparation; accurately communicate WTCI’s mission and benefits; and miscellaneous duties as needed.  

Skills neededExcellent writing and interpersonal communication; self-motivated; detail-oriented; comfortable working in a small office environment; strong analytical skills; experience with customer relationship management software (i.e., Salesforce, ACT, Goldmine); ability to multi-task; experience managing multiple clients and/or accounts; desire to learn and foster partnerships between diverse local businesses; conduct business research and create company profiles; knowledge of Microsoft applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint). 

Global Exchanges

Description: Help design professional and cultural programming for visiting delegations of foreign professionals; escort visiting foreign delegations to meetings with local experts; get acquainted with various government and private sector resources in Maryland; maintain and update database and website content; prepare welcome packets for visitors; perform research projects as needed; attend WTCI networking events; and perform other miscellaneous duties in the internship program field, event planning or office management.

Skills needed: Professional communication and attitude; comfortable with working in a small office environment; good interpersonal skills; detail oriented; ability to complete assignments on deadline; must be able to work independently; interested in working with foreign professionals and learning about foreign cultures and affairs; ability to multi-task; knowledge in Microsoft Office Suite; command of a foreign language preferred but not required. 

Operations and Human Resources

Assist in Operations and Human Resources activities, including:

  • Research and learn about Maryland's top international companies and industries;
  • Maintain client services database;
  • Assist in Board of Directors meetings preparation and reports (including financials)
  • Perform Business Development research and other research projects as needed
  • Maintain WTCI's HRIS and maintain confidentiality of each employees' information
  • Assist with maintaining compliance for employee files and employee handbook
  • Assist with recruitment efforts for both WTCI staff and interns
  • Perform industry compensation analysis
  • Perform Human Resources research and other research projects as needed
  • Draft HR communications to staff including email updates and monthly HR newsletter 
  • Assist in planning of company retreats and social activities 
  • Assist with compiling and analyzing HR reports 
  • Attend all WTCI networking events 
  • Other miscellaneous duties

  • Knowledge in Microsoft Office Suite needed (i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Office 365) 
  • Good written and verbal communication skills

  • Must demonstrate integrity, trust and professionalism in regard to company and employee information 
  • Ability to balance multiple tasks and priorities 
  • Client-service experience preferred but not required. 

Internship Information

Interns are expected to work a minimum of 15 hours per week. Positions are unpaid, but a stipend of $85 per month is granted for parking expenses. All interns make a presentation about their experience to WTCI staff at the end of their internship. 

Internships at WTCI are competitive. The top three to five applicants will be invited for an interview by each manager in charge of the different departments. Each manager might interview at different times, so there is no set interview week. After the interviews, WTCI will let applicants know if they have or have not been approved for an internship.
