Demystifying Decarbonization

November 14, 2022

BALTIMORE, MD – Four Mid-Atlantic C-suite leaders with expertise in environmental innovation will headline the World Trade Center Institute’s (WTCI) next AGILE Innovation Series event, which will focus on climate change and be at the National Aquarium.

The chief executive officers from the aquarium and sHYp, as well as the chief sustainability officers from Baltimore County and Vicinity Energy, will discuss their approaches to addressing climate change, including through public and private sector partnerships. They will dive into how to mitigate and adapt to climate change while remaining fiscally sound.

The discussion will be from 4:30 to 6 p.m. November 15th in the aquarium’s theater. A one-hour networking reception will follow. AGILE events are free to WTCI members and people who attend virtually. Others can attend in person for $50, or $25 if they are a student. Purchase tickets here.

The panelists will Include:

  • National Aquarium Chief Executive Officer John Racanelli, who focuses on the conservation of our oceans, the second largest carbon sink in the world. The aquarium has committed to net zero emissions by 2035. Since 2001, it has partnered with private sector firm Vicinity Energy for chilled water temperature solutions and electronics recycling.
  • Vicinity Energy Chief Sustainability Officer Matt O’Malley, who leads clean energy products and services for urban decarbonization projects at his company, the largest district energy provider in North America. The company tackles global energy problems on a local level and recently introduced the first commercial renewable thermal energy product in the United States.
  • SHYp co-founder and Chief Executive Officer Carl Fischer, whose startup company is the first in the world to use sea water to produce hydrogen without toxic waste byproducts. The company’s electrolyser IP can be located in ports and on vessels. It, too, can be used offshore to harness surplus electricity generated by wind, waves, and solar. Pilot projects of the electrolyser are underway in ports around the world. Fischer is an economist who has founded two Fintech companies and worked with Nobel Peace Prize Laureate M. Yunus.
  • Chief Sustainability Officer Jenn Aiosa, a prominent environmental advocate and scientist who has been tasked with leading Baltimore County's efforts to mitigate the impact of climate change and promote enterprise-wide sustainability initiatives. She has held scientist and executive positions at Blue Water Baltimore, the Chesapeake Conservancy, Chesapeake Bay Foundation, and several Maryland government agencies.

The AGILE innovation series was launched by WTCI in 2017 to help global executives navigate the myriad issues related to being an effective leader. Speakers in the past have been senior leaders from a variety of businesses in the public and private sector, such as Under Armour, Johns Hopkins, Save the Children, McCormick & Co., and Honest Tea.

The visionary sponsor for this year’s AGILE series is Ruppert International. Other sponsors include the National Aquarium, RSM, Stanley Black & Decker, McIndoe Risk Advisory, citybiz.co, TEDCO, and MindGrub.
